Session Description
As AI tools become more prevalent in education, many faculty express concern about potential impacts on students' critical thinking skills. This 60-minute session explores this challenge by examining approaches to digital literacy that acknowledge both AI's capabilities and limitations. Community college faculty will discuss strategies that may help preserve critical thinking while recognizing the realities of AI's presence in students' academic work and future careers.
Key topics:
• Understanding what generative AI can and cannot do well
• Designing assignments that incorporate AI as a learning tool
• Teaching students to use AI to enhance, not replace, critical thinking
Participants will gain:
• Insights into current AI technology capabilities
• Sample assignments that address AI use while preserving authentic student learning and critical thinking
